Ever since I first went to Italy (to explore the country and to learn the cuisine) I remember being fascinated with the cafes that can be found everywhere. They are simple places that offer espresso, cappuccino, soda, alcohol and usually panini and gelato. I remember thinking how great it would be to have something like that here in Toronto. Turns out we already do...

JUNE 11, 2012:

While Italy’s soccer performance on the international stage resulted in a draw yesterday, here in Toronto, the boot of Europe is kicking it out of the park. This summer, The Mad Italian Gelato Bar, which already boasts two locations (one in Little Italy and one in Leaside), is ready to go for the hat trick with a new location in Greektown.

The newest Mad Italian will be located at Carlaw and Danforth, and we’re told that it will offer the same array of gelato flavours and prepared food products that Mad Italian fans have come to know and love. Visitors can also expect a new aesthetic feel to the location, complete with a “retro vibe” that will be sure to fit in well with the rest of the Danforth’s funky restaurant offerings...

TORONTO: The Mad Italian Gelato Bar Introduces ZAZZU Hot Cones. The Mad Italian's new ZAZZU Hot Cones were created by owner Eli Turkiencz from a concept that originated in Italy as an easy snack to eat that is made from healthy ingredients. We tried several of the 8 varieties and had to agree that his ZAZZU or pizza in a hot cone is easier to enjoy than a slippery slice, it also stays warm longer. The Mad Italian Gelato Bar is in Little Italy across from the CHIN Radio building at 589 College Street. To see all of the great photos, click here.

Pizza now in a cone at Mad Italian
$10 Restaurateur: 589 College Street

TORONTO: November 14, 2011 - As soon as I read Jennifer Bain’s article about pizza cones, I knew I had to try one and write about it. The pizza cone is already making a splash in at least nine other countries. However, it’s still fairly new to Canada, where people are hesitant.

When I went to the Mad Italian, the only place in downtown Toronto that has the cones (the Italian has a second location on Bayview), there was no one inside. Granted, this was a cold day and the Mad Italian deals mostly in gelato, but I thought that the big sign in the window reading “ZAZZU PIZZA CONES INSIDE” would catch the attention of the crowds. I was left wondering what Bain herself questions in her article — are pizza cones really worth all the hype? I can answer this simply: of course they are.

Pizza now in a cone at Mad Italian
Cone my gelato - and my pizza

TORONTO: November 9, 2011 - In case gelato was getting old for you, Mad Italian now does pizza the same way. When Eli Turkienicz took over the Mad Italian he tried to think of what would sell during the winter months when gelato sales are down.

“You have ice cream in a cone, well what else can you put in a cone?” he says. “So I thought what about putting pizza in a cone, pizza toppings and stuff.”

Upon further investigation online he discovered a similar dish didn’t exist in the city and decided to introduce his Zazzu hot cones at the Baking and Sweets Show. Since all 75 hot cones sold on the first day he decided to bring 120 along the next morning and still wound up selling out.
